Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary M Sai Kumar has instructed officials to expedite Northeast monsoon preparedness across Greater Chennai Corporation and suburban areas like Avadi and Tambaram.
During a high-level review meeting on 1 September 2026, Kumar set a deadline of September-end for completing desilting and stormwater drain projects.

Impact & Risks

The Northeast monsoon could lead to heavy rainfall, waterlogging, and flooding in low-lying areas of Tamil Nadu, particularly in Greater Chennai and its suburbs. Disruptions to daily life are anticipated if mitigation measures are not completed on time. Risks include electrocution hazards due to exposed electrical infrastructure and potential delays in transportation along major arterial roads. The state government is working to minimise these risks by enhancing drainage systems, clearing waterways, and ensuring safety protocols are in place.
