Gulf System May End 2026 Hurricane-Free Streak
US · Published Oct 6, 2026
• A developing weather system in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico has the potential to become the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, which has been unusually quiet.
• According to the National Hurricane Center, there is a 30% chance of the system forming into a tropical depression or storm within the next two days, increasing to 70% over the next week.

Impact & Risks

If the system develops into a tropical storm or hurricane, it could bring heavy rainfall to parts of the Gulf Coast, particularly Florida. Even if it does not reach tropical storm status, the region is expected to experience significant rainfall. Historically, storms named Isaias have caused notable impacts, such as flooding in the Philadelphia area in 2020. The quiet season so far has been attributed to El Niño conditions, which increase vertical wind shear and disrupt storm formation. However, this system could break the record for the latest first hurricane in a season if it forms after October 8.
