Atlantic Hurricane Forecast Adjusted Amid Super El Niño Concerns
US · Published Aug 20, 2026
The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season forecast has been revised due to the increasing likelihood of a record-strong Super El Niño, according to AccuWeather (source: AccuWeather, 2026).
The updated projection now anticipates 8-11 named storms, 3-4 hurricanes, and 1-2 major hurricanes, a reduction from the initial March forecast of 11-16 named storms.

Impact & Risks

While the total number of storms is expected to decrease, the risk of damaging hurricanes remains significant. Areas along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, particularly the northern and eastern Gulf Coast and the Carolinas, face higher-than-average risks of direct impacts. The northeastern Caribbean is also at increased risk. Warm coastal waters could lead to rapid storm intensification, reducing preparation time for residents and businesses. Historical examples, such as Hurricane Andrew in 1992, highlight that even a low storm count season can be devastating.
