El Niño Alters Atlantic Hurricane Forecast, Reducing Storm Activity
US · Published Aug 20, 2026
The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season forecast has been revised due to the influence of a rapidly strengthening El Niño.
AccuWeather now predicts 8 to 11 named storms, 3 to 4 hurricanes, and 1 to 2 major hurricanes, a significant reduction from earlier estimates.

Impact & Risks

Despite the reduced forecast for overall storm activity, the U.S. Gulf Coast, the Carolinas, and the northeastern Caribbean face elevated risks of direct impacts. Warm coastal waters could lead to rapid intensification of storms that form near land, leaving limited time for preparation. Hawaii is also at risk, with another tropical system potentially impacting the islands within 4-5 days. The state is still recovering from Hurricane Lala, which caused widespread flooding, infrastructure damage, and two fatalities. Residents in high-risk areas are urged to remain vigilant as the peak of the hurricane season approaches.
