• A Central drought assessment team visited Harapanahalli and Hoovinahadagali taluks in Vijayanagara district to evaluate the impact of deficient rainfall on crops, drinking water availability, and rural employment.
• Led by Ajit Kumar Sahu, the team inspected maize, onion, sunflower, and ragi crops, and interacted with farmers about cultivation costs, expected yields, and losses.

Impact & Risks

Farmers in Vijayanagara district are facing significant financial losses due to crop damage caused by deficient rainfall. Maize, onion, sunflower, and ragi crops have been severely affected, with farmers unable to recover their cultivation costs. Drinking water shortages and irregular rural employment further exacerbate the challenges. The Rs 2,500 per acre compensation announced is deemed insufficient, and pending crop insurance claims add to the financial strain.
