• Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav have called for immediate action to prevent stubble burning during the ongoing paddy harvest season.
• During a review meeting at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi, the ministers emphasised the need for accessible alternatives to crop residue burning and urged states to ensure machinery reaches farmers.

Impact & Risks

Stubble burning contributes to severe air pollution, particularly in northern India, affecting soil health and destroying beneficial organisms. The practice is a major concern for the National Capital Region (NCR), where air quality deteriorates during the harvest season. Farmers in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh are directly impacted, with additional risks posed to urban populations due to increased particulate matter in the air. The Centre has urged states to act swiftly to mitigate these risks and prevent further environmental damage.
