Nor'easter Brings Coastal Flooding to Outer Banks
US · Published Oct 19, 2026
• The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an update regarding ongoing coastal flooding along the Outer Banks due to a prolonged nor'easter.
• Moderate oceanside flooding is expected on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands, with water levels potentially reaching 2 to 4 feet above ground level in vulnerable areas.

Impact & Risks

Residents and visitors in low-lying areas of Hatteras and Ocracoke islands face the highest risk of flooding, particularly during high tide cycles. Coastal erosion and ocean overwash have already affected roads and side streets, including N.C. Highway 12. Ferry services to Ocracoke Island remain suspended, and a mandatory evacuation order for visitors to Hatteras Island is in effect. Dangerous surf conditions and strong winds pose additional risks to marine activities. The severity of impacts depends on the storm's track and strength, with conditions expected to peak midweek.
