Impact & Risks

Residents and visitors on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands face significant risks from coastal flooding, ocean overwash, and beach erosion. Vulnerable sections of N.C. Highway 12, including northern Pea Island and northern Ocracoke Island, may become impassable, potentially stranding individuals for multiple days. Soundside flooding could affect low-lying areas, while strong winds may cause isolated power outages and downed trees. Hazardous marine conditions, including offshore waves up to 20 feet, pose dangers to vessels and contribute to erosion. Ferry disruptions and evacuation orders further complicate travel and access to the affected areas.
