This above-normal activity is attributed to climate change and a strong El Niño, which has warmed waters in the Equatorial Pacific. Recent storms, such as Hurricane Lowell, brought heavy rains, high seas, and storm-force winds to the Hawaiian Islands. Additionally, two new regions in the Pacific Ocean have been identified with low to medium odds for tropical formation, alongside a newly formed tropical depression. The National Hurricane Center has also introduced storm surge forecast products for Hawaii this season, reflecting the increasing risks posed by these storms.

Impact & Risks

The Hawaiian Islands have experienced significant impacts from storms like Karina, Lala, Moke, and Lowell, though none made direct landfall. These storms caused heavy rains and high seas, highlighting the region's vulnerability to tropical systems. Historically, Hawaii has seen only nine landfalling storms since the 1950s, but the increasing frequency and intensity of storms due to climate change and El Niño raise concerns. The Atlantic hurricane season, in contrast, has been quieter, but Southeast Texas has still faced impacts from three of the five tropical storms that formed this year.
