Hurricane Lowell Nears Hawaii With Major Impacts Ahead
US · Published Sep 7, 2026
Hurricane Lowell is expected to pass just west of Hawaii from Monday into Tuesday, but its large size could spread dangerous conditions well beyond the storm’s center.
Kauaʻi and Niʻihau face the greatest risk of tropical-storm-force winds, heavy rain, flash flooding and mudslides, while rough surf, rip currents and coastal flooding could affect other islands.

Why It's Important?

The significant size of Hurricane Lowell makes this storm particularly concerning for Hawaii. The anticipated heavy rainfall poses a substantial risk of flash flooding, which can rapidly inundate roads, homes, and infrastructure, especially in low-lying areas and near rivers. The threat of mudslides is also elevated, particularly in regions with steep terrain and saturated soil. Coastal communities are at risk from storm surge, which could lead to 1 to 3 feet of inundation in some areas, exacerbating coastal erosion and damaging property. Furthermore, the rough surf and strong rip currents generated by the hurricane present a serious danger to anyone near or in the ocean, including swimmers, surfers, and boaters. Emergency services may be strained, and travel disruptions are highly likely, impacting supply chains and daily life across the islands.
