Wind Advisory Issued for Portions of Hawai‘i Island
• The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for seven of the eight Hawaiian Islands, including portions of Hawai‘i Island, effective from noon on Friday, July 31, 2026, until 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 1,
• East-northeast winds are expected to reach speeds of 25 to 35 mph (40 to 56 km/h), with gusts up to 50 mph (80 km/h) in most areas. Higher elevations, such as the summits of Maunakea and Mauna Loa, may experience winds of 45 to 50 mph (72 to 80 km/h) with gusts up to 60 mph (96 km/h). The strongest winds will occur downslope, near mountaintops, ridges, and through terrain gaps. Areas on Hawai‘i Island, including Kohala and Ka‘ū, are expected to feel the brunt of these conditions.
Impact & Risks
The high winds pose risks such as shingles being torn off homes, downed trees, and damage to tents and awnings. Driving conditions may become hazardous, particularly for high-profile vehicles. Additionally, the Department of Water Supply has warned of potential disruptions to water services in the Waimea and Waikōloa areas if power outages occur. Customers are advised to reduce water usage by 10% to conserve resources for fire protection and essential needs. Prolonged power outages could lead to further water restrictions, impacting irrigation and other non-essential uses.
