The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued an alert for Hawaii as a tropical disturbance in the Pacific Ocean shows a 90% chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 48 hours (as of August 19, 2026).
This system, located east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands, could bring tropical moisture and rain to the region, with some forecast models suggesting a potential impact on the Big Island.

Impact & Risks

The potential tropical storm poses a significant risk to Hawaii, particularly the Big Island, which is still recovering from Hurricane Lala. Heavy rainfall and tropical moisture could exacerbate existing damage, including flash flooding and power outages. Lala previously caused over 40 inches of rain in some areas, damaged or destroyed at least 100 homes, and left 20,000 customers without power as of August 19, 2026. While most forecast models predict the storm will pass south of Hawaii, some suggest a closer approach or even a direct hit, which could severely impact ongoing recovery efforts. Surf conditions may also be affected depending on the storm's size and proximity.
