The Hawai‘i State Department of Education (HIDOE) has announced that most public schools across the state will resume normal operations on Wednesday, August 19, following Hurricane Lala.
This decision comes after extensive post-storm campus assessments, utility restorations, and recovery efforts.

Impact & Risks

The storm has caused significant disruptions to school operations, particularly on Hawai‘i Island and parts of O‘ahu. Families in these areas are facing challenges such as power outages, damaged infrastructure, and limited road access. Nā‘ālehu Elementary and Ka‘ū High & Pāhala Elementary will remain closed for additional safety assessments, impacting students and staff. Other schools on O‘ahu and Hawai‘i Island have also reported damage, including electrical issues and water damage, which may pose risks to safety and delay full recovery. The HIDOE is working closely with state and county officials to address these issues and ensure a safe return to normal operations.
