The issue stemmed from a software upgrade to the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS), the primary tool used by forecasters to monitor weather and issue warnings. While NOAA Weather Radio continued to function, other dissemination methods, including weather apps, TV graphics, and text alerts, experienced delays of up to 20 minutes. The NWS is investigating the root cause and working to transition to a cloud-based system by 2028 to prevent future disruptions.

The delayed warnings posed significant risks to residents in affected areas, including Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio, where destructive storms were reported.
