Himalayan Glacier Loss Accelerates, Threatening India's Economy and Ecosystem

New research reveals that Himalayan glaciers are losing mass 65% faster than a decade ago, posing significant risks to India's economy and environment.
The study, conducted by Systemiq in collaboration with ICIMOD and other organisations, highlights the critical role of the Himalayan ecosystem in supporting agriculture, hydropower, and livelihoods for millions.

Impact & Risks

The accelerated glacier loss threatens millions of lives and livelihoods across India and South Asia. Glacial floods, such as those in Sikkim (2023) and Uttarakhand (2021), have already caused significant casualties and infrastructure damage. The retreating glaciers also jeopardise water availability, with most river basins in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region expected to reach 'peak water' by mid-century. This could disrupt agriculture, hydropower, and other economic activities that rely on Himalayan water, which underpins 20% of India's GDP. Additionally, 56 glacial lakes have been classified as 'very high risk,' highlighting the urgent need for monitoring and mitigation.
