Recent studies reveal that Himalayan glaciers are losing ice mass 65% faster than a decade ago due to rising global temperatures and regional black carbon emissions.
Black carbon, originating from activities like brick kilns, vehicle emissions, and crop burning in the Indo-Gangetic plains, settles on glaciers, darkening their surface and accelerating melt.

Impact & Risks

The accelerated melting of Himalayan glaciers poses immediate and long-term risks. In the short term, unstable glacial lakes may cause catastrophic floods, known as Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), destroying downstream villages and infrastructure. In the long term, the region will face 'peak water', where glacier runoff reaches its maximum before declining permanently. This will severely impact major rivers like the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra, turning them into seasonal streams and causing water scarcity for billions. Agriculture, which relies heavily on these rivers, will suffer, with crop yields in northern India projected to drop by 15-20%, threatening food security for over 600 million people.
