Hindu Kush Himalaya Glaciers Melting at Unprecedented Rates

• The Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region, known as the Third Pole, is experiencing accelerated glacier loss. Since 1975, glaciers in the region have lost up to 27 metres of ice thickness, with the rate of ice wastage doubling since
• This retreat is driven by elevation-dependent warming, changes in monsoon patterns, and black carbon deposition. The Ganga and Brahmaputra basins have seen significant glacier area reductions of 21% and 16%, respectively. Smaller glaciers, which make up 75% of the region's glaciers, are shrinking fastest, intensifying localised water shortages and increasing the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

Impact & Risks

The accelerated glacier melt threatens water, food, and energy security for nearly two billion people dependent on the HKH river systems. Increased GLOF risks endanger downstream communities and infrastructure, as seen in the recent Nepal flash flood disaster. The retreat of smaller glaciers is expected to exacerbate water stress in the Ganga and Brahmaputra basins, with some rivers at risk of becoming seasonal. Biodiversity and ecosystems in the region are also under threat, even under moderate warming scenarios.
