India Strengthens Tsunami Preparedness with Advanced Early Warning Systems
IN · Published Nov 3, 2026
• India has established the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) at INCOIS, Hyderabad, operational since October
• The centre monitors seismic activity and sea-level changes in the Indian Ocean region, using seismic networks, tide gauges, and deep-ocean observation systems to assess tsunami threats. World Tsunami Awareness Day, observed annually on 5 November, highlights the importance of disaster preparedness and early warning systems. The 2026 theme, 'Be Tsunami Ready: Resilience Starts With You,' focuses on individual and community-level preparedness, emphasising the role of public awareness and evacuation drills in reducing risks.

Impact & Risks

Tsunamis pose significant risks to India's coastal regions, including loss of life, infrastructure damage, and economic disruption. Vulnerable populations, such as fishermen and residents of low-lying coastal areas, are particularly at risk. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami underscored the devastating consequences of inadequate preparedness, highlighting the need for robust early warning systems and community-level resilience.
