Iowa is bracing for an intense heat wave this week, with temperatures reaching highs of 94–96°F (34–36°C) and heat indices climbing to 107°F (42°C) in some areas.
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for most of the state from Sunday, June 28, through Tuesday, June 30, with an extreme heat watch in effect for parts of northeast Iowa.

Impact & Risks

The prolonged heat poses significant risks, including heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and exhaustion. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions, are at heightened risk. Outdoor workers and individuals without access to air conditioning are also particularly vulnerable. Polk County has activated its extreme weather plan, opening cooling shelters across the Des Moines metro area to provide relief.
