Illinois has emerged as the state with the highest number of tornado reports in 2026, far surpassing other states, according to NOAA's Storm Prediction Center.
As of June 22, Illinois has recorded 196 combined confirmed and reported tornadoes, over 110 more than any other state.

Impact & Risks

The high frequency of tornadoes in Illinois has caused widespread damage, particularly in areas like Kankakee, Streator, and Effingham. The storms have resulted in property destruction, including overturned vehicles and damaged homes. Indiana, another Midwest state, has also experienced an unusually high number of tornadoes, nearing its annual record with 75 reported so far. The persistent severe weather pattern has increased risks for residents in the Midwest, while traditionally active states like Oklahoma and Texas have seen relatively fewer tornadoes this year.
