India's Gold Demand Drops 6% Amid Price Volatility
IN · Published Jul 30, 2026
India's gold demand fell by 6% to 131 tonnes in the second quarter of 2026, as volatile prices deterred consumers from making purchases, according to the World Gold Council.
Jewellery demand saw a significant 15% drop to 75 tonnes, despite strong sales during Akshaya Tritiya.

Impact & Risks

The decline in gold demand could impact the jewellery industry, which relies heavily on consumer purchases. Rising grey market activity due to high import tariffs may hurt organized players and reduce government revenue. Additionally, the preference for gold loans over selling gold could indicate financial stress among consumers.
