According to a BloombergNEF report, global nuclear power capacity is projected to grow by 44% by 2036, reaching 535 gigawatts (GW) from 372 GW in
China is expected to nearly double its nuclear capacity to 102 GW, surpassing the United States as the largest holder of nuclear power capacity. India is also set to significantly expand its nuclear energy infrastructure, aiming for 100 GW by 2047, up from the current 8.8 GW. This growth is driven by energy security concerns, increasing electricity demand from AI centers, and global decarbonization goals.

Impact & Risks

The expansion of nuclear power will have significant implications for energy security and climate change mitigation. For India, achieving its ambitious target will require an estimated investment of ₹19.28 trillion (approximately $204 billion). However, the development of nuclear infrastructure also raises concerns about safety, waste management, and geopolitical tensions, particularly in regions with existing nuclear capabilities.
