Monsoon to Remain Active Across India Until 15th September
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread monsoon activity across India until 15th September
• Rainfall is expected to intensify in northwest, central, and western regions. Specific areas such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Gujarat are likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall during this period. Northeast and eastern regions, including Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Odisha, are also forecast to receive heavy showers. South peninsular India, including Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, will see scattered to widespread rainfall. The monsoon has been below average so far, with India receiving 645.5 mm of rainfall, 14% below the normal of 754.5 mm between 1st June and 8th September.
Impact & Risks
The widespread rainfall may lead to waterlogging, localised flooding, and disruptions in transportation across affected regions. Agricultural activities in rain-fed areas could benefit from the rainfall, supporting rural demand. However, heavy rainfall in hilly regions like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may increase the risk of landslides and flash floods. Thunderstorms and lightning in central India could pose additional hazards.
