India Bans Deployment of Seafarers in Strait of Hormuz Amid Security Concerns
IN · Published Jul 16, 2026
India's Directorate General of Shipping has issued a directive prohibiting the deployment of Indian seafarers on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
This decision follows a series of attacks on ships in the region, including incidents on July 14 that resulted in one Indian engineer's death and injuries to nine others.

Impact & Risks

The ban could significantly impact global shipping operations, as Indian nationals make up a large portion of the maritime workforce. Ships already in the region may face crew shortages, and the directive could disrupt supply chains reliant on the Strait of Hormuz. The safety of seafarers remains a critical concern, with the region witnessing a total of 57 incidents and 18 fatalities since the start of the year.
