A recent study published in the journal Science has revealed that El Niño events are becoming significantly stronger due to human-induced global warming.
Researchers found that these events are now over 36% stronger compared to pre-industrial times, with a 16% increase in intensity observed over the past four decades.

The intensification of El Niño events poses significant risks globally, including severe droughts, heavy rainfall, flooding, and extreme heatwaves. These disruptions can lead to widespread economic losses, estimated to run into trillions of dollars, and affect food security due to agricultural impacts. In India, stronger El Niño events are often linked to weaker monsoons, which could exacerbate water shortages and impact crop yields. Additionally, marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs, face heightened risks due to temperature anomalies, potentially leading to widespread coral die-offs and fisheries collapse.
