The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon is set to commence from 19th September
This marks the beginning of the retreating monsoon season in India. The IMD also reported that the country is currently experiencing a rainfall deficit of 15% for the season. This shortfall is significant and could have implications for water availability and agricultural activities in various regions. The monsoon withdrawal typically starts from the northwest parts of India and gradually progresses southward.

Impact & Risks

The 15% rainfall deficit could adversely affect agricultural productivity, particularly in rain-fed areas, and may lead to water scarcity in some regions. Farmers relying on monsoon rains for irrigation might face challenges, potentially impacting crop yields. Additionally, the retreating monsoon could bring dry conditions, increasing the risk of drought in areas already experiencing low rainfall. Urban water supply systems may also come under strain if the deficit persists.
