Below Normal Rainfall Predicted Across India for Late August and Early September
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast below-normal rainfall across the country during the week of 27th August to 2nd September
• Rainfall activity is expected to be normal to above normal over the foothills of the Himalayas and east-central India, while most parts of East India will experience normal rainfall. Peninsular India is likely to see below-normal rainfall during this period. Cumulatively, from 1st June to 26th August 2026, the country recorded rainfall 13% below the Long Period Average (LPA). Additionally, maximum temperatures are predicted to be above normal by 2-3°C in parts of Northwest and Northeast India during several days of the week.

The below-normal rainfall could impact agricultural activities, particularly in regions dependent on monsoon rains for crop irrigation. Areas in Peninsular India may face water stress due to reduced precipitation. Above-normal temperatures in Northwest and Northeast India could exacerbate heat-related health risks and increase energy demand for cooling. These conditions may also affect water availability and soil moisture levels, potentially impacting crop yields.
