US · Published Jun 24, 2026
Northwest Indiana has experienced a dramatic increase in rainfall this June, with totals ranging from 3 to 10 inches over the past two weeks, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
This represents a 150% to 500% increase compared to the 30-year average for this time of year.

Impact & Risks

The excessive rainfall has led to widespread flooding in Northwest Indiana, affecting cities like Munster, Merrillville, and Gary. Roads, parks, and low-lying areas have been inundated, and the Little Calumet River has reached minor flood stage multiple times. The flooding poses risks to property, transportation, and public safety. Additionally, the saturated ground increases the likelihood of further flooding if heavy rains persist. Emergency declarations have been issued to mobilize resources and provide financial assistance to affected residents.
