India's Rice Production Faces Decline Amid Monsoon Deficit
IN · Published Sep 17, 2026
India is experiencing a significant monsoon deficit, with rainfall 13% below normal as of 26 August
This follows one of the driest Junes on record, which has adversely affected agricultural activities, particularly rice production. Former agriculture secretary Siraj Hussain has highlighted that even a normal monsoon in the remaining period may not fully compensate for the earlier shortfall. The critical maturation period of rice crops has been impacted, raising concerns about reduced yields this year.

Impact & Risks

The monsoon deficit is expected to have a direct impact on rice production, a staple crop in India. Farmers in rain-fed regions are particularly vulnerable, as insufficient rainfall during the crop's maturation phase could lead to lower yields and financial losses. This may also affect food security and lead to potential price hikes in the domestic market, impacting consumers across the country.
