Unusually Warm Nights Observed Across India in April 2026
IN · Published May 21, 2026
According to a report by The Hindu, April 2026 experienced unusually warm nights across India, with minimum temperatures rising faster than maximum daytime temperatures in many regions.
While maximum temperatures in central and western India were close to or even below the long-term average, minimum temperatures showed a significant upward trend.
The 'normal' temperature baseline used for comparison is based on the 30-year average from 1991 to 2020, as defined by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Why It's Important?

The rising minimum temperatures could have significant implications for public health, agriculture, and energy consumption. Warmer nights may disrupt sleep patterns, increase heat stress, and exacerbate health issues, particularly for vulnerable populations. In agriculture, higher nighttime temperatures can affect crop yields and growth cycles. Additionally, increased energy demand for cooling during the night could strain power grids and lead to higher electricity costs.
