According to Anil Kumar Rai, India’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, the collaboration is part of agreements made during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Ethiopia in December
Indian companies are set to invest in specialized hospitals and ophthalmology centers in Ethiopia. Additionally, Ethiopian agricultural delegations have visited India to learn about drought-resistant crops, modern farming techniques, and irrigation systems. The partnership also extends to institutional capacity-building, with a 40-member Ethiopian parliamentary delegation recently participating in a governance training program in India.

Impact & Risks

The strengthened partnership is expected to significantly benefit Ethiopia by improving its healthcare infrastructure, advancing agricultural practices, and fostering digital transformation. However, the success of these initiatives depends on effective implementation and sustained collaboration. The partnership could also serve as a model for India’s engagement with other African nations, potentially enhancing its geopolitical influence. Risks include potential delays in project execution and challenges in adapting Indian technologies to Ethiopian conditions.
