India's Export Dependence on US Remains Steady Despite Tariffs

• India's reliance on the United States as its largest export market has remained consistent, with the US accounting for approximately 20% of India's exports in the 12 months through July
• Despite high tariffs imposed during the Trump administration, which peaked at 50% and were later reduced to 10%, India's exports to the US reached $88.5 billion during this period. Other major export destinations include the UAE, China, and the Netherlands. India has also diversified its export portfolio, adding 500 new product lines, particularly in electronics and engineering. Meanwhile, India has accelerated trade negotiations with other markets, including the UK, EU, and Gulf Cooperation Council, to reduce reliance on any single market.

Impact & Risks

The US remains a critical market for Indian exports, particularly in sectors like electronics, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. However, the uncertainty surrounding US trade policies has prompted India to diversify its trade partnerships. While this strategy could reduce risks associated with over-reliance on a single market, it may take years to yield significant results. Smaller markets like Kenya and Sri Lanka have shown growth, but their contributions remain limited compared to the US.
