Half of the World's Dams Could Be Inoperable by 2060 Due to Sedimentation

A recent study published in the journal Nature Sustainability has revealed that nearly half of the world's dams could become functionally inoperable by 2060 due to sediment accumulation.
Sedimentation, caused by soil, silt, and rocks flowing into reservoirs, is reducing water storage capacity and increasing pressure on dam structures.

The sedimentation crisis poses significant risks to water security, agriculture, and public safety. In India, where dams play a crucial role in irrigation and hydroelectric power, sedimentation could severely impact water availability for farming and drinking purposes. Additionally, aging dams filled with sediment may become structural hazards, especially in seismically active regions. The loss of reservoir capacity could also lead to increased flooding risks downstream, endangering lives and property. Without intervention, the economic and environmental costs of managing sediment-filled dams could escalate, placing a heavy burden on future generations.
