Cursor Introduces India-Specific Subscription Ahead of SpaceX Acquisition
IN · Published Jul 28, 2026
• AI coding startup Cursor has launched its first country-specific subscription plan, Cursor Start, priced at ₹649 per month (approximately $7), significantly lower than its standard $20 Pro subscription. This move comes as Cursor prepares for its acquisition by SpaceX, expected to close in Q3
• India, already Cursor's third-largest market globally, has seen its user base triple in the past year. The localized pricing aims to tap into India's vast pool of software developers, which includes over 27 million active developers, according to GitHub. The plan offers features like access to Cursor's Composer 2.5 model and Grok 4.5, but excludes advanced AI models and features available in the Pro subscription.

Impact & Risks

The introduction of a localized pricing model could make AI-assisted coding tools more accessible to Indian developers, fostering innovation and productivity in one of the world's largest developer markets. However, the plan's limited features compared to the Pro subscription may not meet the needs of advanced users. Additionally, measures to restrict access to Indian users only could face challenges, such as circumvention through VPNs.
