India Faces Deadly Heatwave Amid Super El Niño
IN · Published Sep 24, 2026
• India is bracing for a severe heatwave, exacerbated by the ongoing Super El Niño phenomenon, with projections estimating up to 15,800 heat-related deaths by February 2027 (Superkalam, 24 Sep 2026).
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) defines a heatwave in plain regions as temperatures reaching at least 40°C (104°F) with a departure of 4.5°C to 6.4°C above normal averages.

Impact & Risks

The extreme heat poses significant risks to India's population, especially the informal workforce, which constitutes over 88% of the non-agricultural sector (Superkalam, 24 Sep 2026). Outdoor workers, such as construction laborers and street vendors, face increased exposure to dangerous wet-bulb temperatures, which can lead to severe metabolic heat stress, heat stroke, and even fatal multi-organ failure. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare warns that internal body temperatures exceeding 40°C (104°F) can trigger systemic inflammatory responses and rhabdomyolysis, further endangering lives without immediate medical intervention.
