India experienced its hottest August on record, with the national average mean temperature reaching 28.01°C, surpassing the historical normal of 27.24°C by 0.67°C, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Globally, 2026 is projected to become the warmest year ever, with temperatures on track to rise 1.62°C above pre-industrial levels.

Impact & Risks

The rising temperatures pose significant risks to India, including severe and prolonged heat waves, reduced agricultural productivity due to unpredictable monsoons, and economic losses. A recent report warned that extreme heat costs South Asia the equivalent of 32 million full-time jobs annually, with informal workers being the hardest hit. Without action, the region's GDP could decline by nearly 7% by 2050. Additionally, global warming is exacerbating droughts, wildfires, and water scarcity, further threatening livelihoods and ecosystems.
