UN Report Warns Global Warming to Exceed 1.5°C Threshold
IN · Published Sep 2, 2026
A United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report has revealed that Earth is set to exceed the 1.5°C temperature threshold agreed upon in the 2015 Paris climate accord due to the continued burning of coal, oil, and gas.
The report highlights that the world is currently at 1.4°C above pre-industrial levels and is expected to cross the 1.5°C limit within the next few years.

Impact & Risks

The overshoot of the 1.5°C threshold is likely to result in increased weather-related disasters, rising sea levels, and the extinction of species such as coral reefs. Vulnerable populations, particularly in poorer regions, will face heightened risks including food shortages, water scarcity, and health crises. The report also warns of potential tipping points, such as the loss of the West Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, which could lead to irreversible damage. Some areas may become uninhabitable or uninsurable due to extreme climate conditions.
