India's Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) has launched 'Mission Mausam', a comprehensive programme aimed at enhancing weather and climate modelling capabilities.
The initiative focuses on improving forecasting accuracy through advanced technologies such as AI, machine learning, and high-performance computing.

Impact & Risks

Mission Mausam is expected to significantly improve India's ability to predict extreme weather events such as cyclones, heatwaves, cloudbursts, and thunderstorms. Enhanced forecasting accuracy will help mitigate risks associated with natural disasters like floods, landslides, and avalanches. The initiative also aims to provide hyper-local forecasts, which will benefit rural areas and urban centres alike, improving disaster preparedness and response. Additionally, the programme includes research into weather modification techniques such as cloud seeding, which could help address challenges like droughts and fog dispersal.
