The broken drainage systems in Indian cities increase the risk of urban flooding, particularly during the monsoon season. Residential and commercial areas are frequently inundated, disrupting daily life and causing property damage. The lack of an urban flood management plan and the prioritisation of quick stormwater removal over conservation further heighten the risk. Additionally, the inability of current systems to recharge groundwater exacerbates water scarcity issues in semi-arid and tropical regions. Without significant reforms, urban flooding will continue to pose severe risks to infrastructure, public safety, and water resource management.
