Election Commission Modifies Form 6 to Include Parents' SIR Details

The Election Commission of India (EC) has introduced a new section in the online version of Form 6, the voter registration form for new electors.
This section requires applicants to provide details about their or their parents' inclusion in the last Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Impact & Risks

The modification to Form 6 could potentially affect millions of new voters, especially in states where significant deletions occurred during the SIR. For instance, over 27 lakh voters were removed in West Bengal, leaving many unable to vote in recent elections. The lack of clarity on the consequences of selecting certain options in the form adds to the confusion. Critics argue that the EC lacks the authority to make such changes without formal amendments, which could lead to legal challenges and further delays in voter registration processes.
