UN confirms 1.5°C climate target will be missed
IN · Published Sep 2, 2026
The United Nations has officially acknowledged that the global temperature target of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels will be breached in the coming years.
A new report by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) emphasises the need to shift focus from avoiding overshoot to navigating its impacts.

Impact & Risks

The breach of the 1.5°C target is expected to disproportionately affect vulnerable nations, particularly low-lying island states and coastal regions. Risks include intensified heatwaves, floods, and droughts, alongside threats to food security, water resources, and infrastructure. The report highlights the urgency of adaptation measures to mitigate these impacts, though irreversible damage to ecosystems and human health remains a significant concern.
