Tata Motors has introduced the Tiago EV at a starting price of Rs 8.49 lakh (ex-showroom) for the first 10,000 customers. Bookings for the vehicle will commence in October, with deliveries expected to begin in January
The Tiago EV comes with an 8-year or 160,000 km battery warranty. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz has announced its goal to achieve 25% of its sales in India from electric vehicles within the next five years. The company attributes this optimism to the growing popularity of multi-brand EV showrooms, which are helping smaller EV manufacturers sustain operations by increasing sales volumes.

Impact & Risks

The launch of the Tiago EV by Tata Motors is expected to make electric vehicles more accessible to Indian consumers, potentially accelerating the adoption of EVs in the country. Mercedes-Benz's focus on EVs could also encourage other luxury carmakers to follow suit, further boosting the market. However, challenges such as the lack of widespread charging infrastructure and the high initial cost of EVs may hinder rapid adoption. Smaller EV manufacturers may benefit from the rise of multi-brand showrooms, but they still face competition from established players.
