• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that India received only 87.4% of its long period average (LPA) rainfall during the 2026 monsoon season, which spans June to September. The normal rainfall for this period is 868.6 mm, but this year, the country recorded just 759.4 mm, marking a 13% deficit. This makes the 2026 monsoon the fourth lowest rainfall season since
• The LPA is calculated based on rainfall data averaged over 30 to 50 years, providing a benchmark for seasonal precipitation levels. The IMD released this data on 30 September 2026.

Impact & Risks

The 13% rainfall deficit has significant implications for agriculture, water resources, and hydropower generation across India. Reduced monsoon rainfall can exacerbate water scarcity in regions dependent on seasonal rains, potentially affecting crop yields and food security. Farmers in rain-fed areas may face challenges in sustaining their livelihoods. Additionally, the deficit could strain urban water supplies and impact groundwater recharge, leading to long-term consequences for water availability.
