India's Sugar Production Rises Amid Weak Monsoon
IN · Published Nov 7, 2026
• India's sugar production has significantly increased this season, reaching 845,000 metric tonnes by the end of October, which is over eight times higher than the same period last year, according to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd.
• This rise in production comes despite the country experiencing its weakest monsoon in 11 years, with rainfall 12.6% below normal during June to September.

Impact & Risks

The surge in India's sugar production is expected to weigh on global sugar prices, potentially affecting farmers and exporters reliant on higher market rates. Additionally, the below-normal monsoon rainfall could have broader implications for agricultural yields and water availability in India. On a global scale, the developing Super-El Niño may disrupt sugar production in major producing regions, including India, Brazil, and Thailand, leading to potential supply shortages in the future. These disruptions could exacerbate the global sugar deficit forecasted for 2026/27.
