The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released its Long Range Forecast for the 2026 southwest monsoon season, predicting below-normal rainfall across India. The seasonal rainfall from June to September is expected to be around 92% of the Long Period Average (LPA), which is 87 cm based on data from 1971-
The forecast includes a model error margin of ±5%. Current sea surface temperature (SST) conditions indicate a transition from weak La Niña-like conditions to ENSO-neutral conditions over the equatorial Pacific. The IMD also noted the likelihood of El Niño conditions developing during the monsoon season, which could impact rainfall patterns. Additionally, neutral Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions are present, with positive IOD conditions expected to emerge towards the end of the season.
