Global Solar and Wind Resources Highlight Renewable Energy Potential
India · Published Jun 30, 2026
A recent analysis highlights that most of the global population resides in regions rich in solar and wind energy resources, making renewable energy a viable and cost-effective solution for decarbonization.
Approximately two-thirds of humanity lives in low to mid-latitudes, where solar energy is abundant, while a significant portion also resides in areas with strong wind resources, such as the 35°-60° latitude bands.

Impact & Risks

The findings underscore the potential for renewable energy to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and mitigate climate change. For India, which lies in the sun belt, solar energy represents a particularly accessible and affordable resource. However, the transition requires integrated planning and investment to ensure energy security and affordability. Without coordinated efforts, regions may face challenges in scaling renewable energy infrastructure, potentially delaying the shift to a sustainable energy system.
