The study links elevated surface ozone levels during heatwaves to increased mortality from respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. In 2024 alone, heatwave-related deaths included 15,615 cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and 10,898 cases of ischemic heart disease, marking a 3.2% rise compared to non-heatwave periods. Vulnerable populations, particularly in northern India, face heightened risks due to poor air quality. The findings underscore the growing threat of ozone pollution as heatwaves become more frequent and intense, driven by climate change.
