IMD Launches Cyclone Decision Support System for Multi-Hazard Preparedness

• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has launched a WebGIS-based Cyclone Warning and Marine Weather Services Decision Support System on 12 October
• This platform integrates cyclone tracks, intensity, wind distribution, rainfall, storm surge, and river catchment rainfall forecasts into an interactive map. The system aims to enhance multi-hazard preparedness by providing users with a comprehensive view of potential cyclone impacts. It was introduced during a pre-cyclone exercise for the post-monsoon season, involving disaster authorities and technical agencies. The platform is publicly accessible via IMD and RSMC New Delhi websites.

Impact & Risks

The new system is designed to improve decision-making during cyclones by combining multiple hazard forecasts. It highlights that the cone of uncertainty represents the cyclone centre's possible path but does not encompass all areas at risk. Hazards such as wind, rainfall, and storm surge can extend beyond the cone, posing risks to both coastal and inland communities. The system also emphasises the need for local authorities to interpret forecasts in conjunction with exposure and vulnerability data to minimise risks.
