Record Heatwave Sweeps South Asia, Pushing Temperatures to Dangerous Highs
IN · Published May 15, 2026
A record-breaking heatwave is gripping South Asia, with temperatures soaring well above seasonal averages in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
Some areas have recorded temperatures exceeding 45°C (113°F), with peaks reaching 50°C (122°F).
The heatwave has already claimed lives, with at least 10 fatalities reported in Pakistan and multiple deaths in India.

Why It's Important?

The heatwave is severely affecting vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and outdoor laborers. Heat stress is causing cardiovascular strain, kidney injuries, and exacerbating chronic health conditions. In India, over 380 million people engaged in heat-exposed labor are at risk of lost wages and health complications. In Pakistan, cities like Karachi are experiencing record-high temperatures, with fatalities reported due to heat-related illnesses. Bangladesh is also facing rising temperatures, with districts like Dhaka and Rajshahi recording highs of 37-38°C (98.6-100.4°F). The heatwave is straining healthcare systems, reducing labor productivity, and exposing deep socio-economic inequalities.
