The monsoon deficit has exposed vulnerabilities in India's agricultural sector, particularly for smallholder farmers. Declining soil moisture, rising input costs, and uneven rainfall distribution have increased economic risks for farmers. While national food reserves remain stable, the economic security of individual farmers is under threat. The upcoming Rabi season could face additional challenges, including irrigation costs, fertiliser affordability, and market-price uncertainties, which may impact sowing decisions and yields.
